6/29/2009A guy told me the other day how he was at one of the parks here in NYC, and they were paying tribute to Michael Jackson. However a bunch of people were trying to do Thriller, but there was no organization, nor did people know how to dance to it by heart. So the guy I was talking to steps up and becomes the ringmaster of about 50 people, teaching them how to dance to Thriller correctly. A bunch of news reporters and bloggers began asking for his information and he started getting a ton of interviews for taking a leadership role.
But he also said to me how he's been wanting to change his life a lot lately, and not really stay in the career he's in. He wants to do something more creative and helpful to people, like what he did with the people at the park. It reminded him that he has this other part of him, within, calling out. He doesn't know where to really begin, and as a result, doesn't really do anything about it.
So I told him, basically, to not think and just do it. If you think about it, you'll see how big personal projects are, and you might get scared by how big it is. You might feel overwhelmed and give up before you begin. But the point is to hack the project down, bit by bit, until one day it's all done. He said, "Oh yeah. The saying, 'Rome wasn't built in a day' right?"
I replied, "Screw Rome, we're not talking about Rome, we're talking about here and now!" Half joking. I told him even if there's an ABCs to starting the project, but you dive in at F, go all the way to M, and then go and learn about A through E, it doesn't matter. With that we came up with a metaphor that I never heard of, and maybe it was said before, and like minds think alike, etc. etc. blah blah blah.
But what we said was, "No jigsaw puzzle is solved the same way."
Just do it, without thinking, and your goals in life will all come together.
